Hiking the Pyrenees of Andorra

This year winter staid long into spring and the high peaks of the Pyrenees were still covered with a lot of snow. Nevertheless, we wanted to try to hike to some lakes near the skiing station of Grau Roig, which is a part of the Grandvalira skiing area where we had spent a week of skiing years ago.

Still a lot of snow so high up

We saw people with snow shoes or skis, but also groups of young people with shorts and sneakers. The parking is at about 2,200 metres and was free of snow, but soon the snow fields got more and more. We made it up to the second lake through a lot of deep snow, but didn’t go further as hiking was strenuous, when every couple of steps your foot disappears under the snow.

Happy couple
Lake still covered with some snow
Viennese treat high up in the mountains
Flowers of the Day

We are leaving Andorra already again, to hike around some fantastic rock formations in Spain – more next!
