Ravenna

Mosaic of the Emperor Justinian I from the Basilica of San Vitale

Ravenna is known for its well-preserved late Roman and Byzantine architecture, with incredible mosaics. But we soon discovered, that the Green Pass is required to visit the most important sights. For us with a “Red Pass”, no entrance was granted, but we made the most out of it and explored the city as best as we could.

Piazza del Popolo
“Palace of Theodoric” – nowadays considered the entrance to a church

Finally we discovered some of the famous mosaics

Our visit to Ravenna was a little bit disappointing, but we will just have to come again one day. For our next stop on the way back to Austria, we will look for an interesting landscape rather than a city – more on our next post!
