Verdon Gorge

On the way to the Verdon gorge, we came through another fascinating gorge: Gorges de l’Esteron just before Saint-Auban, where we stopped for the night. The next morning we continued, heading to the D71 or Corniche Sublime, which goes along the southern side of the gorge.

The gorge is about 25 km long and was formed by the Verdon River, which has cut a ravine to a depth of 700 meters through the limestone mass. At the end of the canyon, the Verdon flows into the Lake of Sainte-Croix.

When we had started the southern route along the Verdon Gorge, there was a sign warning us, that the road is blocked in 19 km. We decided to do it anyway, and luckily we could drive much more than that, but eventually there were roadworks, and we had to turn around.

Point to turn around

There were no other cars on this route that day, beside another camper from Austria. We met Franz Weiß, an artist, who gave us some prints of his paintings. One is now decorating our camper!

That day, we ended in Barjol, a little town full of fountains, and little rivers with waterfalls. When we entered the big Grande Place, Boule was played next to the big fountain.

Tomorrow we will reach Les Baux de Provence, a place which was high up on our bucket list.
