Updating the spring @ the rear axle

The last scheduled stop on our way to Vienna was the update of the rear compound spring of our camper. We hope to improve handling on road and gaining ground clearance of the cabin for better off road ability. A traditional black smith specialised in repair and enforcement of leaf suspensions made a perfect job!

Ready to start
Original leaf spring in unloaded position
Leaf spring elements are being disassembled
Raw material of leaf spring steel
Leaf spring steel cut into correct length
Drilling the center hole
Fitting the new leaf spring element to the existing compound
Extended compound with one more spring steel layer
Reassembling process needs four hands
Reassembling finished on both sides
Back on the road with much better handling and ground clearance.
We hope that our “back end” handling concerns are now history.
