Through the Anti-Atlas

The Anti-Atlas lies between the Atlas mountains, and the Sahara, and we love its fantastic rock formations, which we had already enjoyed on our first trip. This time we drove from Aït Benhaddour south-west and stopped for the first night at a fantastic place, just below abandoned cave dwellings. (30.474717, -7.625234)

The caves are nowadays used as stables for sheep and goats. But at the moment, they might have been somewhere else.

Parking for the Night

Before it got dark, we had a surprising visitor. An old man with a moped arrived, asking us for help. Together, Edi and the man got the tire repaired and his moped running again. He was very grateful and even tried to pay us.

The next morning, we took the R119 south. The road was good and the landscape fascinating. In the afternoon, we reached the N17 and turned towards Tata. Remembering the full campsite from February, we decided to better stay outside of town.

We found a place next to a well and some acacia trees with petroglyphs in walking distance. (29.743628, -7.782044)

At this hill we were supposed to find some petroglyphs, let’s see!
A giraffe?
An ostrich!
A big cat!!

When we had arrived at the rocks, we didn’t see immediately any petroglyphs, but after Edi had spotted the first one, we recognized more and more. We were especially excited to make out animals, which are already long extinct in this area.

Another grid was activated here

Tomorrow we will go past Tata and take a different route to Tafraout than last time. More soon!

Birders note: we spotted Trompeter Finch, Black Wheatear, White-crowned Wheatear, Crested Lark and Thekla’s Lark in the area with the petroglyphs. Around the cave dwellings were also many larks.
