Sliabh Liag

It was a rainy morning, so we took it easy, and made our way into Sligo around lunchtime. We explored the town a little, but our main destination was Hooked restaurant, where we enjoyed a nice lunch.

From Sligo, we continued along the coast until we found a nice spot at Muckross Head where we could spend the night. After exploring the area a little, we found the word ‘EIRE’ written on the cliff. I’ll tell you more about that later.

The next morning, we made our way to the parking for the Cliffs of Sliabh Liag, from where we could hike to the lookout points. Out of season, you can drive all the way up, but not in summer, so we enjoyed a nice walk instead.

In Glencolmcille, we found a local supermarket with a filling station, which enabled us to top up our water supply. The village lies beautifully in a valley close to the coast, where there is a nice beach. We decided to visit the Folk Village, which was founded by a dedicated local priest who collected many of the artefacts displayed in the small houses.

We saw many places where peat was still being cut. Sometimes the pieces of peat were in piles and sometimes they were in plastic bags. Here, we could finally stop and examine them more closely.

Our next stop was at Bunbeg Beach, where the low tide allowed us to go on a lovely hike and explore a ship wreck.

We continued along the coast, past Bloody Foreland, until we stopped at Magheroarty Beach.

The weather forecast promises one more good day, we will try to make the most out of it.
