The story of the Powerscourt Estate is a tragic one. The house, originally a 13th-century castle, was extensively altered during the 18th century by German architect Richard Cassels. Originally the family seat of the Viscounts Powerscourt, the estate has been sold to the Slazenger family in 1961, founders and former owners of the Slazenger sporting goods business. They renovated the house and were nearly ready to open it to the public, when in 1974 a fire burnt down the whole house, leaving just a shell. It was only renovated in 1996 to be used for shops, a restaurant and as a venue.

Today, the estate is home to a hotel, golf course and distillery, but it is best known for its gardens. National Geographic has rated them as the third most beautiful in the world.

The entrance to the walled garden leads you through a beautiful gate, the 240-year-old Bamberger Gate, originating from the Cathedral of Bamberg in Germany. The 7th Viscount bought this from a curiosity dealer in London. It was made in Vienna in 1770, then installed at Bamberg Cathedral until 1850, before it made its way to Ireland.

Every one of these houses have their unique story, which make them so interesting. Next we will be visiting Killruddery House – more soon!
