Our Corona diary, week 6, crazy world …

World in times of CORONA virus is changing: The price of a barrel oil is now MINUS 37,63 US$ and we eat Stinging-nettle …
The reason for the negative Price is: The demand of oil shrinks and all storage capacity world wide is at its limits, so no place to put the oil which is gushing from the earth …

Thanks to my friend Rosi, who knows a lot about wild plants and what you can eat from them, we started to use our surrounding nature growing nicely in spring as healthy food supply …

Dandelion (Löwenzahn)
This very common plant grows in our garden and as we have something very different to an English lawn it is allowed to grow freely. I love the yellow flowers dotting the garden but also that it provides us with healthy food we just have to pick.

The entire plant, including the leaves, stems, flowers, and roots, is edible and nutritious. Dandelions are found on 6 continents and have been gathered for food since prehistory but are also used in medicine. I remember a delicious cough-sirup my mother made from the flowers.

Stinging-nettle (Brennnessel)

Stinging nettles have many hollow stinging hairs on the leaves and stems, which act like hypodermic needles, injecting histamine that produces a stinging sensation upon contact. It has a long history of use as a source for traditional medicine, food, tea, and textile raw material in ancient societies. To eat it raw you have to roll it with a rolling pin, to prepare it like spinach you blanch them first so that they don’t sting anymore.

Hot water to blanch the nettles
Squeezing the water from the nettles before cutting them and prepare like spinach
Nettle spinach with potatoes and fried eggs – yummy!!
But looking to the crisis numbers again,  US shows a historic impact on the economy, the weekly initial jobless claims rose to 6.6 million, largest 1-week change in history!
Let´s see how the development of US economy will influence European daily life ….
