Mizen Head

Mizen Head, with its dramatic cliff scenery, is traditionally regarded as the most southerly point of mainland Ireland, but it is actually nearby Brow Head, which reaches a little bit further south.

One of the main transatlantic shipping routes passes close by, and Mizen Head was, for many seafarers, the first (or last) sight of Europe.

The tip of the peninsula is almost an island, cut off by a deep chasm, now spanned by a bridge which gives access to an old signal station, a weather station, and a lighthouse.

The parking of Mizen Head had great views and allowed overnight parking, so we took the chairs out and enjoyed the view and the sun, until it got too cold.

Tomorrow we will drive back along the narrow road and continue along the coast.
