Los Azulejos de Veneguera

Jumping over ravines with a long pole – a technic the Canarians once used to get around

From Puerto Mogán we drove inland past the village of Mogán to visit the colourful rocks called “Azulejos”, as they are as colourful as tiles we presume. And colourful they are!

When we had rounded the last bend, we were excited. Especially the turquoise was a colour which you don’t see often in nature. We learned that it results from a chemical reaction of the minerals with the ash of the volcano eruptions.

After we had managed to park our camper, not an easy task as there is not much parking available, we went to explore the area, hiking up into the mountains.

We reached some lovely rock pools and continued a little further up, but then turned around, as there is no circular route without walking back along the road.

Cochineal – the insects which were used as a natural red dye

As the road from Mogán further up into the mountains was closed, we drove all the way back to Maspalomas. We were soaking up the sun on the beach for another day, as there is a nudist area with bar, sunbeds, and parasols for only 7,50 a day! Afterwards, we drove into the mountains from there. More soon!
