The monastery was founded by Saint Colman, son of Duagh in the 7th century, on land given him by his cousin King Guaire Aidne mac Colmáin of Connacht.

The Kilmacduagh round tower dates back to the 11th or 12th century. It was used by the monks as a hiding place in case of attack. At 34 metres tall, it is the tallest tower in Ireland.

The round tower is also notable for its significant lean of over half a metre from the vertical. The only doorway is located around seven metres above ground level.

We finally left the Burren and travelled on, so that we could take a day trip to one of the Aran Islands the following day, since the weather forecast looked promising!
