Dadès Gorges

Looking for Alpine Choughs

We had a cold and very windy night up in the mountains at 2,500 metres, before we started our route through the Dadés gorges. We were close to Agoudal, from where we drove on a new tar road to one of the highest passes in the Altas, the Tizi n’Ouano with 2,900 metres. From here we were going continuously down along the Dadés river, which had carved these valleys and gorges into the mountains.

2,910 metres above sea level

Up here, the mountains were bare, and the road led with many bends smoothly down. Not long ago, there was still a part of this route a spectacular gravel road, but this time is definitively over. Adventure seekers for sure have to find more remote parts of Morocco for dangerous gravel roads.

Where the valley got wider and flat, fields were irrigated and people were working to plough and sow the crop for the next season. A big part of the valley was planted with apple trees, where delicious fruits had just been harvested.

The valley got narrow again, and we came to the gorges, where the road snakes between the river and the rocks, and finally we reached the famous hairpins which you might know from pictures, as they are for sure one of the most photographed sights in Morocco. Above the hairpins, you have the best view from a restaurant, which we used as a lunch stop. The food was good, and we could watch the cars going up and down.

The lower part of the Dadés valley is very touristic, but also here, some rock formations fascinated us.

Boumalne – old city gate

With Boulmane, we had reached the end of the valley and after a fuel stop continued to a campsite we had selected near Kalaat M’Gouna. It was on top of a hill, and we had great views in all directions.

In the evening, the wind, which had accompanied us already the whole day, increased and was rattling on the windows. We were told, that rain is coming, and we decided to sit it out and spend a day here, working and looking after our car, which still isn’t feeling completely well.

Storm clouds, rain and very strong wind – a day to be spent inside

The second morning, the sun was finally shining again, and the mountains were covered in snow! More soon!!

Camping Chabab – highly recommended
