We had accepted the offer of a guided tour through the desert, which took us close to the Algerian border and finally to Erg Chebbi, the highest sand dunes of Morocco. On the way we found some fossils, had great views and finally drove over the dunes, around Erg Chebbi and finally to Mezourga, the hot spot for dune activities.

The first part was on stony terrain, with no deep sand. We made some stops and finally came to an area, where they knew to find fossils. Cordy got lucky by encountering a really nice piece.

When we reached a sandy river bed, leading us in the direction of Erg Chebbi, we had to reduce the pressure in our tires, to get through the soft sand.

From the rain last autumn, there was still a lake in front of the dunes, which was a nice surprise, the water a strong contrast to the sand of the dunes. We stayed at Sahara Garden, a lodge and campsite a little away from the bustle of tourist activities. Nevertheless, during our evening stroll to the dunes, we came across the sundowner excursions on camels. (Strictly speaking: dromedaries).

We had a great and exiting day, driving so much through sand, which was relaxed, as we had our guides with us, showing us the tracks we could drive. Our plan is now, to cross the desert on our own – more soon!
