Congost de Mont-Rebei

Viacamp

After driving off-road the last days, it was time for a hike. As there is no more spectacular hike than the Mont-Rebei, and we were very close to this gorge, we went there. Our hike started south of Puente de Montañana, at the big parking which was closed, and had a 2,3 m restriction anyway. Along the road, parking was not allowed, but that was where everybody had parked and we did the same.

The impressive gorge was carved into the Montsec mountain range by the Noguera Ribagorçana river over millions of years. Today, this gorge forms the border between Catalonia and Aragon. The route runs along a narrow, spectacular path carved into the rock high above the river, which allows breathtaking views and for sure is not for the faint-hearted as there is nothing separating you from the river hundreds of metres below you.

Close to the river, you can see another path carved into the rocks. This must be the original one, before the dam further down the river was constructed. This path through the gorge was an important north-south connection, where you didn’t have to cross the high Montsec mountains.

We appreciated the cable running along the wall

Some crazy rock climbers had used a SUP to get to this wall and were climbing up. We suppose this is a popular route and has hooks installed. To us, it looked very scary.

Here as well, the water level was very low as the river runs into the Canalles reservoir, which we had seen the day before.

It took us about 3 hours to walk through this fascinating gorge. For tomorrow some rain is predicted, and we will use that to work from the camper, but maybe the afternoon allows another off-road tour.
