Chefchaouen

Traditional bread oven in the Rif mountains

After leaving the coast at Oued Laou, we drove through impressive mountains of the Rif massiv, until we reached Chefchaouen, the “Blue City”.

We could park above the Medina and walk down from there, where we immediately immersed into the blue of the alleys.

We walked up until the waterfall above town, just that there was no water in the river. All the water of the source seems to be used for the town, with many pipes leading to the houses.

After a last glimpse of Chefchaouen, we continued south, taking a minor road in very bad condition, which finally took us to a reservoir, where we wanted to spend the night. On the way we came through a village, where it was market day. The roads were blocked by cars, but mostly donkeys and pedestrians. Many women wore the traditional costumes of the Rif mountains, with their typical hats.

Finally, we reached the Barrage El Wahda, where we found a nice and peaceful spot for the night.

Tomorrow we will reach the area of Fes and Meknes, where will we go first?
