@ Bremen

Today we reached the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, which is the smallest state of Germany, consisting mainly of the town of Bremen and Bremerhaven. The historic city centre of Bremen truly fascinated us.

We had managed to park close to the centre next to the Beck beer factory and from there crossed the bridge to the old part.

Allied bombing destroyed the majority of the historical Hanseatic city as well as 60% of the area of Bremen during World War II, which you can clearly see in the after war architecture dominating the town. Luckily, the buildings around the main square were rebuilt in their old glory.

The Bremen Town Musicians

The town musicians from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale are a donkey, a dog, a cat and a cock which travel together to Bremen in the story. Here they are eternalised next to the town hall and of course everybody has to take a photo with them.

Böttcher Street

The Böttcher Street is famous for its unusual architecture. Most of its buildings were erected between 1922 and 1931, primarily as a result of the initiative of Ludwig Roselius, a Bremen-based coffee-trader. The street and its buildings are a rare example of an architectural ensemble belonging to a variant of the expressionist style. Several of the houses can be classed as Brick Expressionism.
